Final Animation Progress

Written by Austin Hines  |  Thursday, 29 October 2009

Final animation will be complete by Monday! Here's a play by play update of how progress is coming:

Muffet:
- Add Teeth and Tounge to Muffet Model - DONE

SHOT01 - Exterior Approach
- Animate Walk Cycle - DONE
- Add Spoon- DONE
- Make head look around more
- CLOTH SIM: Add additional frames to allow cloth to animate smoothly from rest pose to starting animation pose.
- Bake Cloth Sim
- Tweak cloth sim
- Bake final cloth sim

SHOT02 - Muffet looks into barn and notices tuffet
- Add Spoon - DONE
- Muffet looks like she's just rocking back and forth as she turns instead of shifting her weight. - DONE
- Make weight shifts as she turns more apparent by makiing rocking more subtle and move her vertically up and down instead of side to side. - DONE
- Give her a moment longer to notice stool, make lurch forward less dramatic. - DONE

SHOT03 - low angle on tuffet from inside as Muffet walks in
- Add some followthrough on the prep movement for the arms before she starts moving forward dramatically.  - DONE
- her forward momentum should stay constant instead of midway at her footswitch. - DONE
- The skinning of the dress needs to be fixed for her walking. It intersects her legs currently. - SKINNING METHOD DOES NOT WORK, DRESS STRETCH IS TOO MUCH.
- Test Dynamic Cloth Simulation - DONE - This can be accomplished in a reasonable amount of time.

- CLOTH SIM: Add additional frames to allow cloth to animate smoothly from rest pose to starting animation pose. - DONE
- Bake Cloth Sim - DONE
- Tweak cloth sim
- Bake final cloth sim - DONE

SHOT04 - front view, walk in and sit down on tuffet
- Dress breaks when she walks. Try a test with nCloth. - DONE
- Check skinning on shoes - left heel seems to be having problems - DONE
- Make walk less robotic, implement timing from reference footage. - DONE
- Implement nCloth dress - DONE
- Fix Button Penetration (or just remove buttons) - use a transform constraint
- try to get cloth to maintain more volume
- Geometry separation line between head and body becomes visible with cloth jostling around. Find a way to prevent the neck of the dress from stretching.
- Fix foley foot noises to match new foot placement and timing.

SHOT05 - Close-up bringing bowl up to face, startled, look to left.
- Add blend shape to create a confused mouth (Snarl Left and Snarl Right shapes) - DONE
- Add blendshapes to create full blinks. -DONE
- Fix hand/spoon contact issues - DONE
- Implement animation from reference footage: Muffet sits into frame, happy to start eating curds, and the startled glance up as she hears the cow moo.- DONE

SHOT06 - cut.

SHOT07 - POV looking up to ceiling, notice cow. Spider notices muffet, and then gives a start.
- Fix cow deformation, add some tension as he strains to lift his head. - DONE
- Re-Animate spider action to fit with reference footage. - DONE
- Add desparately flailing arms for cow. - NO
- Implement character moments from reference footage - spider should be surprised to find muffet in his domain, and then notice her curds. - DONE
- Add a wrap deformer with transparent webbing texture to make the cow be wrapped into the spider web.  - DONE
- PLUSSING: Make the spider web more dense.

SHOT08a - Over the shoulder from spider to muffet, we see that he's looking at her curds. spider turns towards muffet, lunges in the last few frames
628-665
- Add muffet frightful shaking, her expression changes.  - DONE
- Animate slow spider movement  - SHOT REWORKED TO CUT THIS
- Work on timing of smash zoom. Cut seems too quick. - SHOT REWORKED TO NOT HAVE SMASH ZOOM.
- Add Curds object to bowl. - DONE

- PLUSSING: Cloth sim on dress.

SHOT09 - spider runs over to muffet, muffet freaks out, spider sucks in curds.
- Animate spider run - DONE
- Animate muffet freak out - DONE
- re-animate bowl blend between muffet and spider. - DONE

- CLOTH SIM: Add additional frames to allow cloth to animate smoothly from rest pose to starting animation pose.
- Bake Cloth Sim
- Tweak cloth sim
- Bake final cloth sim

- Fix sound to time up with spider's feet. -DONE

SHOT10 - spider satisfaction
- loop animation and render out more frame to lengthen shot. - DONE
- Add blotches of curds to spider's face

CURDS Animation and Lighting update

Written by Austin Hines  |  Monday, 26 October 2009

Here's the animation I presented in class. It still needs a lot of work. There's a couple of sequences where Miss Muffet looks like a robot when she walks. These are left over from some rough blocking animation. Also the skin weights on her dress and the cow need some work. Whenever you see a bowl, imagine it is filled with delicious, cool, glistening cottage cheese.

Rough Blocking

Written by Austin Hines  |  Wednesday, 21 October 2009

The barn is very much a rough set at this point. I decided to try to match my framing to my storyboards and then build the set around that.

Also to come are a few more blend shapes for when Miss Muffet is unhappy and terrified, and also for the spider when he's curious, intent, and feeling intense pleasure.

Rough Layout Stills

Written by Austin Hines  |  Tuesday, 20 October 2009

Well, I started building my barn and putting my characters together in the same scene! It's pretty exciting! Here's a preview of some of my renders from the rough layout work. I just threw in a MentalRay Physical Sun for these shots to try to see how things would need to be placed to get my shaft of light to highlight the tuffet.

Shot 02

The depth of field here was really expensive. It took 11.5 min to render this single 960x540 frame, and that's not even full resolution! I'll need to look into cheaper solutions to achieve this effect.
